An extremely rare and important set of three Sèvres biscuit vases and covers (cassoulette a monter) designed by Jean-Jaques Bachelier and executed by Josse-Francois-Joseph Le Riche - created as part of the 'Surtout' for the service to celebrate the marriage of Dauphin (The Duc de Berry - The future Louis XVI) and his bride the Arch Duchess Marie-Antoinette of Austria on 16th May 1770 - it included a colonnaded 'surtout de table' in gilt bronze, made of grey and yellow marble and to be filled with Sevres porcelain, which included these biscuit vases on the plinths with putti figures.
After the banquet, the whole of the 'surtout' was sent back to Sevres and sold to the marchand mercier Mme. Lair - who in turn sold off in small lots

Finials lacking (as are all the very few currently on exhibition in Museums) and minor restoration to chipsIt appears from the Sevres records that the finials were intended to be of a simple ball shape

The 'enfants a la colonne' is recorded in Le Biscuit de Sevres by Bourgeois number 221, where it is described as being modelled by Duplessis
