Description
|
An extremely rare Meissen sauceboat or 'sauciere als Schiff', in biscuit porcelain, modelled in the shape of a imaginary Egyptian boat after Giovanni Battista Piranesi and edged with burnished gold. It is moulded with emperors, eagles, bulls and dogs heads, signs of the zodiac, flowers and coiled ropes all highlighted with a matt gold. The spout is fashioned in the shape of a snarling hound and the handle terminates in a curved eagles head. An early dating for this piece is considered appropriate, due to the superb quality and crisp moulding and the fact that biscuit porcelain with gilding was very fashionable across Europe at this time.
