Description
|
Saint James’s Italian Comedy scent bottle modelled as Harlequin and Columbine; the seated Columbine holds in her hand a red wine filled glass above her head, a wine bottle in her other hand. Harlequin wearing a black mask, stands by her side holding a sliced-open water melon. A pecking bird sitting on a bunch of grapes surrounded by leaves forms the stopper. The scent receptacle is at the back and formed as a tree, encrusted with leaves. Typical flower painting to her skirt, including two red cherries with a green mound base, the underside painted with typical green circular motif in the border and flowers in the centre. Literature: G.E. Bryant, The Chelsea Porcelain Toys, p.92, pl.25, no.4. Meyer Sassoon Collection, Sotheby’s 1965, lot 57.
