Dates Circa 1794
Medium Porcelain
Origin France
Description Sèvres cup and saucer (Gobelet et soucoupe à Boizot) painted with geological type oval panels of clear moss agate and mossy outcrops suspended from Etruscan style gilded and pink rose garlands, the borders painted with a rich beau bleu and intricate arabesques.

Painter's mark for Michael-Gabriel Commelin (Active 1768-1802) and gilders' mark for GI for Étienne-Gabriel Girard (Active 1762-1805).

Literature This unusual mark is recorded in David Peters, Sevres Plates and Services Vol 1, p.13, where he notes: RR to UU: a small number of items exist with these date letters although use of the date letter system officially ceased in 1783. It seems likely that RR to UU signify revolutionary calendar (II-V) rather than the Gregorian calendar (1794-1797).

This cup and saucer has both the rr and the Republique Française cypher marks and is most unusual.
