Origin France
Description An extremely rare two-handled cup and saucer. (TASSE ‘A L’ETRUSQUE’ ET SOUCOUPE) The cup with a shallow circular bowl and a flaring cylindrical neck, the two linked with upright strap handles, the centre of the saucer painted with branches of peaches and plums on the corner of a marble-topped table, the saucer border and cup neck painted with oval panels alternately painted with scattered pink roses on a gilt seeded ground and garlands of pink roses suspended from blue bows on a gilt trellis and oeil-de-pedrix ground, the whole between concentric bands of blue beads and gilt dots on a carmine ground Circa 1792-4... The shape is documented in a working drawing inscribed "gobelet et soucoupe de la laiterie de la reine qui l’on nomme forme Crachoire et dont le pied a Ete relargie par ordre de Monsieur Regnier.  The shape, whose title "Crachoire" refers to its resemblance to a spittoon, is derived from the classical kantharos (drinking cup) shape, also represented in the Denton collection. Classical examples, however, do not have a coiled foot. Painted by Jacques-Francois-Louis de Laroche (1758-1802) and gilded by Henri-Martin Prevost (1757-97)

The shape of this cup and saucer is from the designs for Marie Antoinette’s dairy at Rambouillet, the service introduced classical decoration on Greek and Roman vessels known as Etruscan style.

Cup 8cm High

Saucer 17.5cm Dia.

Literature A cup and saucer of the same design but with different decoration are on display at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs–Paris.
